Nilüfer Göle

About:

Nilüfer Göle is Professor of Sociology at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris, and the author of The Forbidden Modern: Civilization and Veiling (1996), which is published in several foreign languages. She works on the new configurations between Islam and modernity, and explores the emergence of Islam in different public spheres: Islam in Public. Turkey, Iran and Europe (2006, with Ludwig Ammann eds, first edition in German 2004). Her sociological approach also has produced a broader critique of Eurocentrism with regard to emerging Islamic identities at the close of the 20th century. She has explored the complexities of the encounter and the interpenetrations between Europe and Islam in a recent publication in French, Interpenetrations. L’Islam et l’Europe (2005).
